Thai Ching Cymbals |
|
The Ching is a small metal percusive instrument. Don't let the size of this instrument fool you however. It is considered to be a very important instrument in the Thai ensembles. The role of the ching is often to keep the rhythm steady. Much in the same mannor of a conductor in western ensembles. The player of the ching is also quite often the leader of the ensemble. The ching is basically a pair of small cymbals, each one made of thick metal shaped like a small cup. Played by hitting them together the sound that eminates is a very high pitched crisp metal sound. At the bottom of each cymbal cup is a small hole through which is passed the connecting string. The strings role is for convenience only and helps to hold them in playing position. |
